Background of the Study
Automated banking services, including ATMs, online banking platforms, and self-service kiosks, have significantly transformed the retail banking landscape by increasing efficiency and convenience. GTBank in Delta State has been at the forefront of implementing these technologies to streamline operations and enhance customer experiences (Ibrahim, 2023). However, the proliferation of automated systems has also given rise to new challenges, particularly in the area of banking fraud. Fraudsters exploit vulnerabilities in digital systems, using sophisticated techniques to bypass security measures and commit financial crimes. This study explores the relationship between the adoption of automated banking services and the incidence of banking fraud at GTBank.

The integration of automated systems has reduced human error and operational costs while facilitating faster service delivery. Nonetheless, these benefits come with inherent risks. Issues such as cyber-attacks, identity theft, and transaction manipulation are increasingly common, highlighting the need for robust security protocols (Chukwu, 2024). GTBank’s experience in Delta State provides a critical context for examining how automated processes can inadvertently create opportunities for fraudulent activities. This research aims to assess the vulnerabilities inherent in automated banking systems and to evaluate the effectiveness of current fraud prevention measures. It also explores potential improvements to safeguard automated operations, ensuring that efficiency gains do not come at the cost of increased fraud risk (Nwachukwu, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
While automated banking services have enhanced operational efficiency at GTBank, they have simultaneously introduced new vulnerabilities that fraudsters exploit. Incidents of unauthorized transactions, cyber-attacks, and identity theft have raised serious concerns about the security of automated platforms (Ibrahim, 2023). The challenge lies in balancing the benefits of automation with the imperative to secure systems against increasingly sophisticated fraud schemes. Additionally, limitations in existing security protocols and inadequate staff training on emerging threats further compound the risk of fraud.

These issues not only compromise customer trust but also result in significant financial losses for the bank. The inability to promptly detect and mitigate fraudulent activities can have long-lasting impacts on operational stability and reputation. This study seeks to identify the specific vulnerabilities within GTBank’s automated systems and to evaluate the current fraud prevention strategies. The goal is to propose comprehensive measures that enhance security without undermining the efficiency benefits of automation.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the impact of automated banking services on the incidence of fraud at GTBank.
  2. To identify vulnerabilities in automated systems that facilitate fraudulent activities.
  3. To propose strategies to strengthen security protocols in automated banking.

Research Questions

  1. How do automated banking services influence the incidence of fraud at GTBank?
  2. What are the key vulnerabilities in automated systems that fraudsters exploit?
  3. What measures can mitigate the risks of fraud in automated banking?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Automated banking services are significantly associated with increased instances of banking fraud.
  2. Inadequate security protocols in automated systems contribute to higher fraud rates.
  3. Strengthening security measures in automated banking reduces the incidence of fraud.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on GTBank’s automated banking services in Delta State and their relationship with banking fraud. Limitations include evolving fraud techniques, reliance on self-reported security incident data, and difficulties in obtaining comprehensive internal records.
